NGD: Sankey 7-String "The Tyger" - jtkung - 08-22-2015

I was thinking for a while on a multi-scale 7-string with versatility outside of the metal range. Michael Sankey and I collaborated on this custom build, and it's a beast.

Features
  • Swamp Ash, chambered body with epoxy/fibre laminate and Cocobolo top
  • Bolt-on East Indian Rosewood neck with African Blackwood stringers.
  • African Blackwood fretboard with white binding
  • White binding and Luminlay LED side dots
  • 25″ treble side, 26.5″ bass side scale length
  • 22 Stainless steel frets, rounded fret ends, and a zero fret
  • Reverse headstock with matching Cocobolo veneer and Gotoh locking tuners
  • ABM bridges with Graphtech piezo saddles
  • Lace Alumitone Deathbucker 7 pickups
  • Switchable stereo output (mag/piezo)
It was designed to be a somewhat dark guitar, and it's a very warm guitar as you would expect from the tonewoods, though the Swamp Ash and the bolt-on give it some bite. The neck hum gives an amazingly warm jazz sound. Splitting it gives clarity while keeping it warm. The bridge hum has girth and breadth and is not too tinny like many bridge hums. For solos, this thing screams with singing sustain. The piezos have that characteristic bright, transient attack which contrast with the mags.

Playability is superb as the neck is not too wide, and with a natural finish so you can feel the wood. The same with the body. Balance is surprisingly good given the Rosewood/African Blackwood neck.

Overall, it's a an amazingly versatile 7-string that can do jazz to pop to metal. And in style!
