Digital vs Analog Modeling
#1
Before DSP and electronics became so powerful, guitar modeling was based on simulating tube amp circuits and counds using solid-state transistors and circuits. tech21 is famous for their line of pedals and racks that do this, as well as Sansamp.

When DSP started to become mainstream, more and more companies chose to emulate sounds in this way -- through software which is a lot more flexible as you can change the algorithm and sounds quickly.  Digitech, Rolands, Zoom, Line6 all have created great products this way.

The new Gorillas on the block are now Kemper, Fractal Audio, and Line 6.  All have something to offer the modern guitarist. There has never been a better time to be a guitarist!
