If you look at all the bass players out there -- you get your share of lovers of Fender and Rickenbackers. But there's a trend that there are far more modern players and styles out there.  Basses were first to adopt laminate necks, more exotic tops and woods, and different shapes other than your typical double-horn configuration -- though that remains a baseline design for many modern instruments.
