I have found these are the best forums if you want to get a sense of where the state-of-the-art is for guitars:
- The Gear Page. Overall guitars, effects, etc. Focuses on traditional instruments and playing. This crowd loves Strats, Teles,, Les Pauls and classic rock/blues.
- Seven String Guitar Authority. Focuses on 7-string guitars and hence tends toward metal and modern playing. There's also sections on standard 6-string and other areas.
- Acoustic Guitar Forum - Custom Shop. This forum discusses the state-of-the-art in modern, boutique acoustic guitars. Lots of eye candy that punishes your wallet.
