Studio Compressors in a Box
#1
Three of the best studio compressors are:
  • Teletronix LA-2A
  • UREI 1176
  • API 525
A few makers have sought to recreate these in a pedal format for guitarists since these are used widely on records for guitars.

The Effectrode PC-2A ($339) attempts to recreate LA-2A, while the Origin Effects Cali76 ($380-600) attempts to recreate the 1176 in two different size formats (the larger one with a transformer). For a cheaper 1176, the MXR M76 Studio Comp ($180) also tries to also do it. For the API, they put a 525 and 553 EQ in a box for about $500 called the API TranZformer. Pretty cool stuff.

The Cali76 is the one that seems to get most of the love. Though the M76 is pretty good for the money, and the PC-2A is used by David Gilmour.  The API is relatively new so no real reviews on it yet. You can't go wrong with any of these pedals for that silky halo effect on your tone!
