It's a great time for guitars and electronic pickups. the basic design has not really changed, but so many people still working on this area -- different structures, windings, and magnets.  They are tailoring the impedance, resonant frequency, and frequency response to fit the music style.  Bereknuckle pickups comes to mind. 

Then you have the modern guys -- rethinking things. Like EMG, Lace, Zexcoil, and Cycfi.  It is a great time to be a guitarist!
