Klon Clones
#1
The Klon is a guitar pedal with cult status. Original units sell for thousands of dollars.  But you can get a clone easily. One my my favs is the Mythical OD.  Check it out!

I acquired this pedal recently, and the sound is spectacular. Extremely dynamic, with a thickness and sustain that is stunning.  It is also very loud with high output.  It's a buffered bypass, so probably best put at the end of the signal chain.  The Mythical OD also has different choices for the diodes. I chose:
  • Low clippers: 1N34 Ge
  • High clippers: NOS Telefunken OA126 Germanium
From the maker back in 2014:
"Currently I have settled on
  • 1N34A - Germanium - Warm, soft, vintage clipping
  • OA128 - Silicon - More headroom, slightly edgier clipping
That being said there are many options out there that will work.
BAT41s silcone diodes are excellent replacements for the 1N34s as are 1N270, 1N60 etc... Just about any of the germanium family of diodes will work in the circuit and provide a warmer sounding clipping. I have tried numerous options in the second clipping position and love the OA12x series of diodes. The increased headroom and a satisfying, grittier clipping sound that adds more versatility to the effect.

My personal favorites are a 1N34 in one side and Telefunken OA12x in the other. I hope to be able to offer the "almost extinct" Telefunken OA126 again in the future as it edges out the OA128 slightly especially at higher volume."

Looks like the OA126 Ge diodes are now an option.
I think this is the best Klon clone out there -- especially for the money.

Note: if you use this pedal in conjunction with some Strymon pedals (Timeline), please be aware that the Klon circuit uses a charge pump IC to increase the incoming 9V to 18V.  Many of the ICs (including the MAX1044 voltage doubler) use a switching frequency that can be aliased back into the audio band and cause a high-pitched whine or whistle.  There's some heterodyning effect going on between these two pedals.
