Ned Steinberger
#1
I've been a huge fan of Ned Steinberger's pioneering work -- esp the GL and GM models.  But much less ethusiastic on his latest designs. The body styles lack any curves and style. His upcoming trem should be cool, though. he's basing it off his NS Design bass. That body is not too pretty in my opinion. No curves and the top horn is way too long.

The basses are available, and I think are made in the Czech Republic. And not cheap at $2800 USD for the CR5 Radius model.  I guess labor isn't that cheap in Eastern Europe anymore.

I like the idea of the piezo bridge and the way the tuners work. Now if he could only get a better body design.  It just looks a bit ugly to me. This video below was from NAMM Summer 2015. It's almost a year later and still no word of a production date.  His social media sites seem to focus much more on the violins and upright bass models, so maybe they're rethinking how to introduce headless guitars again to the market. It's a tough sell., though starting to make inroads with companies like *strandberg making great strides.

It seems like NS Design could compete favorably with *strandberg for headless.   Here's a few things I think they could do:
  • Have a different body style that's more curvy and angular to match modern player aesthetics
  • Keep the current body materials and construction, and maybe offer some different tops
  • Offer stainless steel frets
  • Different options for the pickups (add Alumitones, Lundgren, etc.)
  • Emphasize the Steinberger hardware which has always been great.
  • Emphasize the piezo polar design option
  • Finally -- add an option for a 7 and 8-string design
If you did these things, this could easily compete with most headless guitars out there.
