Matsuda Deconstruction Doubleneck

Matsuda’s deconstruction design has been showcased here a few times, but here’s a new take on it — a doubleneck! The top part is a 6-string electric guitar while the bottom part is a 6-string with a sitar-type pickup and sound.

I’m a big fan of his designs, but it looks like the idea of this doubleneck possibly didn’t come from him directly but rather was a client request. Sometimes, these commissions can take a design into amazing directions, and sometimes they can go nowhere. In this case, I am on the fence. It seems a waste to have that headless 6-string which is the main part of the guitar used for a sitar-like sound. Though there is a neck pickup to capture some of the archtop sound. I just think a modern guitar like this should have a modern unique sound — not try and cop an existing instrument sound. The top 6-string has an interesting dampening pad built into the neck near the headstock, but I don’t find the sound particularly awe-inspiring, and would have rather had a headless design here which would makes sense with the other headless neck. But I am sure this custom commission is exactly what the owner wanted!

In any case, there is some complicated construction going on. They don’t share the same deconstructed bodies. The sitar-like guitar appears to use the standard deconstruction body like previous designs, while the additional neck uses a body that sort of wraps around the other body — both from the top and back perspective.

Definitely a unique addition to an already unique and modern guitar.
