Bass guitars seem to push the boundaries of modern design much more so than guitars. Steinberger for example started with the bass guitar first before delving into guitars. An example of some modern bass design is in the Mirabella “Trap Door” acoustic bass. It’s basically got the construction and features evident in modern guitar archtops, but extended to bass. The sound holes are reminiscent of D’Aquisto archtops while also featuring side sound ports apparent in modern acoustic guitars.
